Another One Bites The Dust

There aren’t that many NFA dealers in Louisiana, and they tend to be in the southern part of the state. There was, for many years, one fairly high profile guy here in the north who had a professional-looking website and a sterling reputation on Gunbroker.com. In 2005, I got interested in buying a can and found this guy’s name through Google. Instead of just calling him, though, I got on the NFA web boards and did a search on his name… and found that he had just been arrested that week for some sort of NFA-related shenanigans. His website was acquired by some pron domain parking site and his Gunbroker rep went from A+ to “Where’s my stuff?”

The story was partially resolved yesterday.

I don’t know the guy and I don’t know anything about whatever he may have done wrong, but I know that the enforcement in that area of regulation tends to be, umm, very zealous. The upshot of it all is that there is one less NFA guy to deal with, and I often wonder if that isn’t really the goal of all the Byzantine (no, they only dreamed of having something as complicated as Title 18 of the U.S.C.) laws in that area.

The Modern World

So last night we’re at an event where there is live teevee coverage, and the Boater family is on teevee. About 10 seconds after it starts, my cell phone rings - and it’s the Boater’s dad, calling to tell me that we’re on teevee.

You wonder what someone, awakened from cryo-sleep after only 50 years, would think of that.

And… someone just really really needs to figure out that whole transporter beam thing NOW.

In Louisiana, The Future’s So Bright…

Filed under: — Forlorn Boater @ 7:18 am

oh, wait, no it isn’t:

Now, a majority of public school students are considered low-income in a total of 14 states, including 11 in the South. The South shows tremendous variability, with 84 percent of students considered low-income in Louisiana, 75 percent in Mississippi, 62 percent in Florida, 49 percent in North Carolina, but only 33 percent in Virginia.

How in the world have we come to this in this state? Well, of my 1985 high school graduating class, I can name about 3 other people who still live in Louisiana. Most of them got on a lifeboat and rowed away to Texas. It was bad then… it got worse… and with eighty-four percent of kids in public school in LA living in low-income households, I’m guessing it’s not getting any better. A LOT of those kids are going to stop going to school and start working full-time as soon as the law allows - or they will become sumdoods and boost Louisiana’s ever-growing prison population. At least prisons are a growth industry here…

Louisiana has its charms, but they are awfully hard to see in any kind of statistic you might come across.
