Lots Of This In The News Lately

Oops

Mmmm, Wireless Broadband

Filed under: — Forlorn Boater @ 11:53 am

Tamara’s cut cable got me thinking about this, and I discovered that Verizon is having a “special” (I suspect it will be permanent) on standalone wireless broadband access; $59.99 a month with a 2 year contract. Our (admittedly faster) DSL is $42.95 a month, so the price delta is not that far off to be able to take your connection with you anywhere. To top that off, Verizon’s whole network just went Rev A, baby, so the speed is there unless you are d/l’ing movies (you know who you are). Warning - Verizon doesn’t like when you use its “unlimited” service too much, but again unless you are d/l’ing a bunch of movies or .mp3’s, you’d probably be fine.

Boater Code of Laws, Section 1.

Criminal Law:

A suspect is innocent until proven guilty, unless his middle name is “Wayne,” or some derivative thereof, in which case he is guilty of possession of methamphetamine, in addition to the other crimes of which he is guilty.

Lane Discipline

Filed under: — Forlorn Boater @ 7:51 am

Have you heard of it? You, Mr. Obama ‘08, in your Hyundakia, happily staying in the outside lane when (1) the inside lane is empty and (2) about 10 people are merging off of the Interstate into the outside lane. You, Mr. 1977 Chevy pickup truck, happily ignoring the nice lane right in front of you and pulling into the Boater’s lane while the Boater happens to be RIGHT FREAKING NEXT TO YOU. Condition Yellow pays off, people, I saw him a long time before he saw me - if he ever did - and avoided him because I was ready to do that. $100 says this driver had no insurance.

And I couldn’t get a good photo of this through the windshield, but… you, the guy in the 1985 ex-U-Haul panel truck, loaded to the ceiling with 18-wheeler tires, with the tailgate open: Do you think that the man standing in the back of the truck is going to be able to stop those 7-foot-high stacks of tires when they start falling out? Maybe he’s figuring that the thing can’t accelerate fast enough to overcome the inertia of the tires, or maybe he’s figuring that the guy in the back is an illegal anyway and who’s he going to sue? $100 says this driver had no insurance.

And you, Mr. Monte Carlo SS driver, hope it worked out OK for you, seeing as how you hit the light pole head on hard enough to total your car. Some ambulance driver paramedic had to clean up the mess, not to mention the three uniform units. How can you be going THAT fast THERE? Slow down, it isn’t NASCAR out there.

It’s the Road Warrior, dammit.

Everything is Tactical

So I’m at the Bass Pro Shops at lunch (this is a theme, get used to it) and I spy this:

Tacticality

I guess that everything really is tactical now.

Lightning.

Filed under: — Forlorn Boater @ 8:18 am

We’ve been having an awful stretch of violent weather around here (not so bad as the Texans, though. Dry land is a myth!). Early this week a big thunderstorm rolled through with an unusual amount of lightning. I saw a big bolt hit the big neon sign for the strip club downtown and knock it out; perhaps Someone was unhappy with the drink specials? Sadly, it also took out our DVR (the second one this year), so it’s off to the cable company I go. Ahh, another evening of setting “record entire series” for Formula 1 racing, Shooting Gallery, Guns & Ammo TV, Shooting USA, and American Rifleman TV.

It also zapped my stash of recorded stuff. The Rifleman show with the FN-SCAR factory tour. Top Gear / Jeremy Clarkson reruns. And I’m just going to have to order Lost In Translation on DVD. (S. Coppola - much much much better behind the camera than in front of it. P.S. - the soundtrack for this is great too, with Air doing a great atmospheric tune called “Alone in Kyoto.”)

Ahh, Nintendo.

So we roll with Nintendo DS Lites here at the Boathouse; each of the Junior Boaters has one. This week, we broke a FOURTH one. Including the one we lost, we have bought 3 and repaired three. (This doesn’t count the regular DS’s, the GBA’s, the GB’s, and the GBC’s that we have broken.) I’m going to repair the one that’s currently broken (to keep for myself) and I ordered a new Onyx Black one to replace the broken white one for Junior Boater #1 in the meantime. Nobody add that all up, please.

Reggie Fils-Aime, at least put me on the Christmas card list, OK?
