Emm Won, Ayyy.

At the Fun Show on Sunday the Boater had the chance to fondle pretty much every variant of the Springfield M1A. The Boater used to have a lovely Super Match M1A that would hold just under 1 MOA with Fed 168 Match, but it wasn’t particularly reliable and it was stupid heavy. The SOCOM II version of the M1A carries on the heavy tradition; the Big Metal Rail makes it feel like swinging a tree trunk. The ordinary SOCOM was much handier, but the brake on the thing appears to be integral and non-removable, and 16″ is pretty short for a .308. The Scout, which I rarely see, is the sweet spot in the lineup. As Baby Bear says, 18″ is Just Right. That forward-mounted top rail is a concern, though - a bit of rapid fire and that thing is going to get HOT. Aimpoint’s web site says that the Comp M3 (a suitable optic) has an operating temp range of -45°- +70° C, -50° - +160° F. I can’t imagine that any optic is going to like to live there, although I haven’t read of any failures in actual use.

Get ‘em while they’re hot.

Freight Train

You know all those people on TV who say that a tornado sounds like a freight train? Well, I didn’t hear that or anything else, but an F1 twister touched down about a 1/2 mile from the Boathouse Saturday. We were not spindled, folded or mutilated, but some nice neighbor folks lost roofs, trees and assorted yard art to the winds. No FEMA trailers needed. The affected folks and local authorities displayed a distinctly non-Katrina-esque response, and there were no reports of looting. Imagine that.

Lead Me Not Into Temptation

Those who know the Boater know that I have a serious fetish for Pelican Cases. After the Accident, I got busy buying these, and now I have more than any reasonable person whose email address doesn’t end in .mil has a use for. But now, I am jonesing again. For 2007, Pelican has come out with The One Case To Rule Them All, And In the Plastic Bind Them: The Pelican Model 1780W Weapons Case. Boaters rejoice!

It holds enough M4s to give Sarah Brady the vapors. Me want. MSRP $1099.95.

I needs me a Big Green Box, soonest.

Remington Does The Right Thing:

“Remington to Sever Sponsorship Ties with Jim Zumbo

Madison, North Carolina – As a result of comments made by Mr. Jim Zumbo in recent postings on his blog site, Remington Arms Company, Inc., has severed all sponsorship ties with Mr. Zumbo effective immediately. While Mr. Zumbo is entitled to his opinions and has the constitutional right to freely express those opinions, these comments are solely his, and do not reflect the views of Remington.

“Remington has spent tens of millions of dollars defending our Second Amendment rights to privately own and possess firearms and we will continue to vigorously fight to protect these rights,” commented Tommy Millner, Remington’s CEO and President. “As hunters and shooters of all interest levels, we should strive to utilize this unfortunate occurrence to unite as a whole in support of our Second Amendment rights.”

We regret having to terminate our long-standing relationship with Mr. Zumbo, who is a well-respected writer and life-long hunter.”

Think I’ll get that 700 I’ve been putting off.

Dumb Lyric of the Day.

Filed under: — Forlorn Boater @ 9:03 am

“We’re heading for Venus, and still we stand tall,
Cause maybe they’ve seen us and welcome us all.
With so many light years to go and things to be found
I’m sure that we’ll all miss her so.”

Europe, “The Final Countdown”

Okay, podnuh. First off, Venus? Holy global warming, Batman:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus

Second, who is they? And third, seeing as how Venus is next-door neighbors with Earth, I would hope that “they” had seen us, seeing as how we’ve been blasting electromagnetic radiation into space now for decades. If not, well, the secret is to bang the rocks together, guys. Fourth, “light years?” I don’t think so, Scooter.

I don’t know what bothers me more, these lyrics or the fact that they bother me enough to blog about them. I need to get out more, or at least stop listening to XM41, The Boneyard.

Stuff That Is Broken.

Filed under: — Forlorn Boater @ 8:45 pm

Here are photos of some stuff at my house that broke over the weekend. The Nintendo DS Lite is the THIRD DS Lite that has broken under the watchful care of Junior Boaters #1 and 2.

Both laptops are down with various ailments. Even the cable box is down. But the microwave? Et tu, Whirlpool?

Some broken stuff.

Some more broken stuff.
